The quest to outsell the competitor’s newest console is but a long way away, as we’re more than 3 months away from the projected release of the PS4 and the Xbox One. However, according to a Strategy Analytics survey (well-regarded consumer analysis), the early balance is tipped in Sony’s favor.

According to their recent findings, 14.2% of polled consumers were very or somewhat likely to purchase a PS4 console within the first twelve months of the system’s launch, compared to the 9.5% who would purchase an Xbox One. Extrapolating the data to sales numbers would then suggest that the PS4 would have a near 50% lead in sales based on the 6,000 participant over the US and Europe markets.

They cite Sony’s superb performance at E3 over Microsoft as one of the early indicators when they asked these consumers back in June of 2013. However, it’s very early into the game. Microsoft has already reversed some of their most stringent DRM stances, which will definitely affect the decisions made by the consumer. As well we still have huge industry events like gamescom and Tokyo Game Show coming up, with expectations of release dates and unannounced games being revealed in the months ahead. There’s a lot that can change even after launch.

That said, Sony must be feeling good about this news. The Xbox 360 has been more popular in the US than the PS3 over the past generation, and there’s nothing more that Sony would like to do is take back the market lead for the PS4’s generation.
