June NPD: The Last Of Us Tops US Retail Sales

Every month NPD, a sales and market research group, record and publish a list ranking the video games and consoles physically sold in North America. This list shared among corporations throughout the gaming industry. Today, on NeoGAF, they shared the June NPD results for new games sold at retailers within North America. Here are the results:

"1. The Last Of Us (PS3)** Sony (Corp)2. Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS) Nintendo3. Minecraft (360) Microsoft (Corp)4. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (360, PS3, PC, NWU)** Activision Blizzard (Corp)5. NBA 2K13 (360, PS3, WII, NWU, PSP, PC)** Take 2 Interactive (Corp)6. Injustice: Gods Among Us (360, PS3, NWU)** Warner Bros. Interactive7. Donkey Kong Country Returns (3DS, WII) Nintendo8. Deadpool (360, PS3) Activision Blizzard (Corp)9. Battlefield 3 (360, PS3, PC)** Electronic Arts10. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS) Nintendo**(includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)"

As you can see, The Last Of Us topped all other sales in the US and Canada, despite being released in the middle of the month on June 14. It’s also reportedly the “third highest game to launch during the month of June since NPD began tracking sales in 1995.” Quite impressive for a PS3-exclusive title launched in the 7th year of production.

Also of note is the fact that the 3DS has three titles in the Top 10 this month. The handheld device has become increasingly popular over the last year, selling 225,000 devices this past month and has been edging out the PS Vita in software sales for quite some time.

Additionally, Xbox 360 continues to dominate the US market by selling 140,000 consoles in June. That puts them at thirty consecutive months outselling all other consoles in the region. Oddly enough, when discussing the Top 10 console games sold in June (purposefully excluding the 3DS titles), they say that seven of them are played on the 360, including Grand Theft Auto IV. GTA IV initially released over five years ago, meaning that the hype for Grand Theft Auto V must be propping up sales for its predecessor. At least, that’s what the June NPD numbers suggest.
